Ecology
LEST is committed to an environmental transition process, which it intends to strengthen, in line with its research remit and the guidelines set by its supervisory bodies. This approach is based on shares relating to both the operation from the laboratory and on the practices professional. The ECOLOGY Committee is a key driver of this.
A committed committee
Established in 2023, the ECOLOGY Committee brings together members from the various sections of LEST, research and support staff. Its remit is to organise these initiatives, support their implementation and thereby help to embed this commitment within a a collective and gradual approach. It welcomes and encourages initiatives in this area from all LEST members. It also aims to encourage LEST staff to undertake training on the transition and to support them in this process.
It therefore helps to to facilitate a collective discussion within the laboratory. It identifies areas for action, supports their implementation and encourages staff to gradually take ownership of them. It encourages all LEST members to take initiatives in this direction.
His work focuses on both material conditions the unit’s operation and on the professional practices. As LEST has its own premises, particular attention is paid to the management of infrastructure and energy consumption. At the same time, the committee supports changes in practices relating to scientific activities, travel and the organisation of events.
Incorporation into institutional policies
The national guidelines issued by the CNRS and Aix-Marseille University In the areas of ecological transition and social and environmental responsibility, these factors have led to the establishment of the Ecology Committee by encouraging laboratories to implement measures to reduce energy consumption, limit emissions associated with research activities, and develop more sustainable practices.
The’energy analysis produced in 2025 at laboratory scale highlights positive developments, particularly in terms of electricity consumption and water management. It also highlights areas for improvement, particularly in relation to the energy sources used.
LEST’s approach is therefore part of an institutional framework, whilst taking into account the the distinctive features of its activities in the humanities and social sciences.
Objectives
Consolidate the measures already undertaken, and to develop new ones, in line with the laboratory’s operational capabilities.
The aim is to make changes to infrastructure, facilities and practices, in order to to promote a more prudent and sensible approach to resource management. The committee aims to strengthen the’staff involvement, by supporting the integration of environmental considerations into their day-to-day working practices.
Its aim is to to structure and foster a sustainable collective dynamic, by creating spaces for discussion and shared reflection that enable the development of initiatives tailored to the LEST context.
